I have returned several times to the theme of vehicular traffic.
In this, my second, traffic seriesĀ From There to HereĀ (2014) I used internet images captured from traffic cameras, representing a specific journey in real time and space. This series represents a single journey from Burlington to Ottawa on a specific day (January 27, 2014), and each of these pictures archives and historicizes a moment and place. Each painting is marked with the specific location and time of the image capture, either on the back or on the front as part of the image. The physical/literal journey is a personal one, as is the figurative/metaphorical one: for a number of years I travelled regularly from Southern- to Eastern Ontario to help care for a family member. My intent in these works is to engage an objective narrative, such that a viewer might begin to look for landmarks or clues, but also to infuse a subjective narrative: in the subject matter (the journey as metaphor), and also in the manner (paintwork or colour), which might reflect states of mind.
